WHO epidimeologist Richard Pibodi warn of new pandemic following a wave of bird flu, El Pais reports.
A new epidemic of bird flu started two-three years ago because of a specific type of A(H5N1) virus, Pigodi says. There are concerns that the virus can develop an ability to human-to-human transfer. This could be particularly dangerous in rural areas where poultry farming is widespread.
"We call for vigilance. Do not pick up dead or dying birds or other animals. People at the poultry farms must be well protected," - warned an expert.
Scientists are reported to be studying the genetic data of these viruses to track and create vaccines.
The bird flu epidemic was first registered in 1996. Cases of human infection with bird flu have been reported since 2003, after close contact with birds. This strain of flu is particularly dangerous due to the rapid spread of the virus through the respiratory system and causing pneumonia.
