Presidents Emomali Rahmon of Tajikistan and Vladimir Putin of Russia are scheduled to meet on December 24 at the Igora resort in Russia's Leningrad Oblast. The meeting will focus on critical aspects of bilateral cooperation, including political, economic, military-technical, and cultural-humanitarian relations, ASIA-Plus reports.
Migration policy will be a key topic of discussion. Russian presidential aide Yury Ushakov noted that the leaders would address pressing concerns related to migration, a matter of growing significance in light of recent challenges faced by Tajik migrants in Russia.
Additionally, the leaders will consider their countries' joint activities within the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). Russia is currently chairing the CIS, with Tajikistan set to assume the role in 2025.
President Rahmon’s visit coincides with the informal CIS summit scheduled for December 25. During the summit, President Putin will review the outcomes of Russia's CIS chairmanship in 2024. Leaders will also have the opportunity to exchange views on international matters in an informal setting.
Russia remains a key trading partner for Tajikistan, with bilateral trade reaching $1.08bn between January and September 2024, a 10.1% increase from the same period in 2023. Russia is also a major investor in Tajikistan's economy, with an investment volume of $1.6bn. Additionally, Russia supplies approximately 90% of Tajikistan's oil product needs.
The countries maintain close ties in education, with over 36,000 students and postgraduates from Tajikistan currently enrolled in Russian universities.
