The Samara District Court has remanded three individuals accused of attempting to assassinate Russian State Duma deputy Mikhail Matveyev into custody. The case involves 19-year-old Murod Musurov from Uzbekistan, 19-year-old Nekruz Bakhirov from Tajikistan, and a 16-year-old teenager from Samara.
The court has ordered the detention of all three suspects for one month and 19 days, with custody extending until September 17. Initially, the criminal case was opened under the charge of hooliganism. However, Alexander Bastrykin, the head of the Investigative Committee of Russia, reclassified the case as an attempted murder of a parliamentarian.
The suspects are now accused of attempting to murder two or more individuals performing their public duties, an offense committed by an organized group. If convicted, the accused faces up to 15 years in prison.
The incident occurred on July 18 when Matveyev, driving along Samara’s embankment, witnessed an attack by migrants on a local resident. Matveyev intervened, resulting in him being struck on the head and his driver sustaining a broken collarbone. Matveyev, known for his anti-migrant stance, has expressed a desire to investigate how Bakhirov obtained a Russian passport.
The investigation has revealed that two additional individuals, both female, were involved in the attack and are currently being sought by the police. Bakhirov, previously implicated in three criminal cases (two thefts and one robbery), admitted his guilt in court and offered an apology to Matveyev. These prior cases had been dropped due to reconciliation.
Bakhirov’s relatives, who appeared in court to support him, cited his health issues. His father, accompanied by a support group from Tajikistan, was unable to provide his precise address in Samara.
Matveyev criticized Judge Karina Bychkova for allegedly guiding the defendant in reading his statements. He noted that a judge responsible for Bakhirov’s previous case resigned in 2023. Additionally, Matveyev plans to investigate the Bakhirov family's potential involvement in a “migrant factory” that allegedly facilitated the illegal legalization of migrants.
Alexander Bastrykin has demanded a report on the termination of criminal cases against Bakhirov and called for an investigation into the actions of officials from the Department for Migration Issues.
Matveyev is known for his stance on tightening rules for migrants and has frequently spoken out against labor migrants, advocating for stricter regulations.
