US President-elect Donald Trump has made a number of controversial statements before he takes office, sparking discussions around the world. Representatives of different circles are expressing different opinions on his statements.
Daryo sought the opinions of Uzbeks living in the US on this issue. Below, we share the perspective of Azamat Abdullayev, an Uzbek residing in the United States.
"Donald Trump has come a long way to the elections. He won the elections with a huge margin. What does this mean? Donald Trump has gained great trust, those who voted for him will support him no matter what Trump says.
What do ordinary Americans think of Trump's statements on Greenland and Canada? As an Uzbek citizen living in the United States, I can say that Trump's views are not new. He made similar statements in 2019.
It would be wrong to say that this is only Trump's desire. Because the United States was interested in Greenland even before Trump. After World War II, in 1946, the United States offered Denmark money to buy Greenland. But the Danish government refused. Greenland is the largest island in the world. Territorially, it is an autonomous country belonging to Denmark. Its own government .
In 2024, Greenland declared its intention to become independent from Denmark. Concerned about this, Denmark and the United States began to act again. Greenland is a mountainous region with glaciers and a population of 60 thousand. After Denmark joined NATO, the United States, by mutual agreement, built a military base in Greenland. US citizens moved to this base.
Why does the US need Greenland?
Greenland is strategically important in terms of its geographical location. It connects Europe with the US. This island also has a lot of mineral resources. Previously, these resources were covered with glaciers, so it was impossible to conduct mining there. But due to global warming, glaciers are melting, new roads are opening up. Therefore, the US has learned that if the ice melts in Greenland, there will be opportunities to extract resources. The question arises: "If the US offers a lot of money, will Denmark sell the island?"
I think that even if Denmark does not want to sell, it will be forced to do so. Because if Denmark rejects the US offer, I think Trump will use Putin's method. I think that the US will do the same things that Putin did to annex Crimea to Russia. The only difference between the US and Russia is that the US will still give money to Denmark so as not to go down in history as the one who annexed Greenland. We know that Putin held a referendum in Crimea, in quotes.
Everyone unanimously agreed to join Russia, and then Russia annexed Crimea. The US will do the same. The small population of Greenland will probably agree to join the US. Because they don’t have the money, they don’t have the resources to get back on their feet. If they join the US, they will have new infrastructure, new roads, a new system.
Trump's ambitions for Canada
In addition to Greenland, Trump expressed his intention to include Canada as the 51st state in the United States. But many took this proposal seriously and expressed their opinions. During a phone call with Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau, Trump raised the question of why we should give you money for nothing.
It is known that the United States invests $ 2 billion a year in Canada. To help its neighbor. True, the United States buys dairy and wood products from Canada. But Trump said that we can also get these products from other countries. So why should we invest in Canada? he asked. Trudeau could not give Trump a definitive answer to his questions. If we are giving you so much money, then turn us into a state, Trump said with a touch of humor.
In my opinion, after Trump takes the oath as president, the first thing he will do is optimize the country's foreign spending. Trump has assigned this task to Elon Musk. Based on this, the US is warning Canada. If you don't become a state, get ready, we won't give you any more money.
Returning to Greenland, in my opinion, Trump will probably not be able to annex the island within four years. Trump simply sent a message to the world: no one should look at Greenland, we are still on Greenland's side.
Statement on the Panama Canal
Another statement by Trump is related to returning the Panama Canal to the US. Why does the US want to return the Panama Canal to itself? Because, according to Trump, Panama gave the gift given by the US to another country - China. Trump stated that he thinks this is a mistake.
About the Gulf of Mexico
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has suggested that America return the historical name after US President-elect Donald Trump's statement about his intention to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America. Although Trump's statement on this matter was humorous, many expressed their reaction to it. Trump has such a personality that even his humorous statements cause serious discussions.
Trump's stance on illegal immigrants
The topic of illegal immigrants is one of Trump's favorite topics. We know that there are a lot of Uzbeks living in America. Not only Uzbeks, but also migrants from all over the world. Trump was known to the public during his previous presidency for his harsh statements about illegal migration. This time he is raising the same issue.
"This time, everything is serious, no one can escape measures on illegal migration," he said. When Trump first came to power, he was still new to big politics, he did not have a strong team. He imitated others. Including Putin. I think Trump's statements on Greenland and Canada are also imitations of Putin. In my opinion, Trump is a supporter of Putin. Putin has talked a lot about plans to restore the former Soviet Union, wrapped in paper. Trump is also like Putin. Only he does not wrap his thoughts in paper, but openly expresses them.
Returning to the topic of migrants, we do not know what laws will be issued this time. When Trump spoke about illegal migrants, he first raised the issue of deporting those who committed crimes in their own country and came to the United States. "And then we will deal with the rest," Trump said.
Trump's statements have always been one of the main topics among Uzbeks. But my point is that Uzbeks should not worry at all. If they have the documents in place, if they have a green card, if they are US citizens, there is no need to worry. But if those who came through Mexico, who first came legally and then became illegal, they should be worried. Because the US is a country that does not like illegal immigrants. No country at all likes illegal immigrants.
Therefore, if there are illegal immigrants in the US, they should correct their documents. This is also harmful to the image of Uzbekistan. In addition, it can also create obstacles for Uzbeks who want to come to the US legally. The question arises: how can illegal immigrants stay in the US? Many bloggers and lawyers have spoken out on this issue, answered questions. There are legal ways.
Applying for citizenship is one of them. In addition, you can go to court. It is forbidden to deport migrants from the country until the court considers this appeal. But Trump should probably change this law too. Because the courts of such people used to consider the cases for a long time, 10-15 years. During this time, they were given the right to work in the United States. But Trump is demanding to reduce this period. The courts should consider the appeals faster, and depending on this, migrants should either be sent back to their homeland or be officially allowed to work in the United States, Trump says. Therefore, it will probably not be easy for citizens who are now in the United States illegally.
It is also expected that it will be difficult for migrants whose children are US citizens and who themselves are citizens of another country. Trump is telling them to take their children with them, or let them stay and leave. No parent would abandon their child in another country. It goes without saying that they would have to take their child, who is a US citizen, with them.
In addition, Trump is raising the issue of not automatically granting citizenship to children born in the US to non-US parents, even if they are born in the US. Because such a law exists only in America, not in other countries, Trump says.
How bad is Islamophobia in the US?
Today, Islamophobia is on the rise in Europe, especially in England. In my opinion, Islamophobia has always existed in the US. It will never go away. Because there are many religions, and the more religions there are, the more contradictions there will be. Everyone promotes their own religion. Islam is one of the fastest growing religions in the world. The number of Muslims in the world is 1.6 billion. This makes the hearts of representatives of other religions tremble. There are a lot of Muslims living in England.
The birth rate in the country has decreased. The number of Muslims who come as migrants is increasing. It has reached the point where roads are closed for Muslims to pray during Eid. It is natural that Europeans are afraid when they see the increasing number of Muslims, their unity and unity are increasing. Based on this, they are developing all sorts of tricks, organizing all sorts of terrorist acts to discredit Islam. Currently, attempts to instill the idea that Muslims are terrorists in the whole world have intensified. The media is also working hard on this.
Such Islamophobia is also increasing in America. A famous UFC fighter has also spoken out in this sense, discrediting Islam. He has openly said that the USA is only a Christian country, that Muslims should go to their own country. Trump is also an Islamophobe. No matter what anyone says, he is an Islamophobe. The fact that he came to power means that now everyone can openly express their opinion against Islam. Because there are a lot of Islamophobes in America.
True, there is the rule of law, but now everything will be different, Islamophobia will probably increase. What can Muslims do in response to this? "In many cases, when it is time for prayer while walking on the street, I witness our compatriots praying together on the street in order to avoid making up for it. I would recommend that they stay away from this. As much as possible, Americans should not be angered, they should pray at home or in mosques. The more Muslims see them praying together, the more anger this will arouse in them. Therefore, it is better to be careful."
