A witness has recounted seeing a gunman on a rooftop just moments before shots rang out at a Donald Trump rally in Pennsylvania, BBC reported. Greg Smith described observing the armed individual crawling atop a building adjacent to the event in Butler County.
"I noticed this guy bear-crawling up the roof of the building beside us, about 50 feet away," Smith said. "He had a rifle, which was clearly visible."
Smith expressed concern over the delay in addressing the threat, questioning why Trump had not been evacuated sooner.
"I'm thinking to myself, 'Why is Trump still speaking? Why have they not pulled him off the stage?' Then, the next thing you know, five shots ring out."
Former President Donald Trump was swiftly surrounded by Secret Service agents and escorted to safety after sustaining an injury. Witnesses reported seeing blood on his face, with Trump later confirming that a bullet had grazed his ear.
Authorities later confirmed that the gunman was fatally shot by Secret Service agents. Anthony Guglielmi, a spokesman for the Secret Service, stated that agents had "neutralized the shooter" and implemented protective measures promptly.
The incident, now under investigation as an attempted assassination, resulted in the death of a rally attendee and left two others critically injured, according to authorities.
Greg Smith criticized the security response at the rally, highlighting the presence of terrified children and questioning why there were no Secret Service agents on nearby rooftops, calling it a complete security failure.
Earlier President Shavkat Mirziyoyev of Uzbekistan has conveyed deep concern upon learning of the attempt on Trump's life, condemning the act of violence and wishing Trump a speedy recovery.
