Azerbaijan's President Ilham Aliyev expressed a preference for working with a Republican administration in the United States, noting a comfort in the relationship with President Donald Trump. This was conveyed during the II Shusha Global Media Forum on July 20. When asked about his preferred candidate for the upcoming U.S. elections, he noted that the decision would be made by the American people.
Additionally, Aliyev admired Trump's firm stance on traditional values, affirming that "the majority of Azerbaijani people not only agree with this stance but also actively support and implement it."
Reflecting on U.S.-Azerbaijani relations, the president highlighted the success and efficiency of interactions with Republican administrations. He emphasized the fruitful cooperation during Trump's presidency, which was characterized by mutual respect and appreciation of support.
Despite occasional difficulties, he underscored the strategic importance of Azerbaijan's relationship with the U.S. He referenced Azerbaijan's significant role in peacekeeping missions, particularly in Afghanistan, where Azerbaijan was both the first non-NATO country to participate and the last to withdraw. Aliyev stated, "Our partnership in Afghanistan was crucial, and we remained until the very end, departing with the Turkish armed forces."
Aliyev expressed dissatisfaction with the current U.S. administration, criticizing its unilateral approach and tendency to "create divisions in the Caucasus." He specifically denounced the financial aid provided to Armenia for military purposes under the European Peace Mechanism, arguing, "Although it is termed a peace mechanism, its true intent is military funding, which is completely unacceptable."
Addressing the issue of media bias, he recalled Trump's characterization of certain reports as "fake news," and pointed out the biased coverage by leading publications such as the "Washington Post" and the "New York Times." He remarked, "The ‘Washington Post’ has published numerous editorials naming me a dictator and satrap."
Azerbaijan's President expressed hope that post-election, both Washington and Europe would gain a better understanding of Azerbaijan's potential and its role in the region.
