The National Human Rights Center of Uzbekistan, in collaboration with the Embassy of Switzerland in Uzbekistan and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) Regional Delegation for Central Asia, hosted a special event to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Geneva Conventions on December 17. The occasion also marked the unveiling of the Uzbek translation of the Conventions in Latin script.
More than 50 participants attended the ceremony, including members of the Legislative Chamber and Senate of the Oliy Majlis of Uzbekistan, government officials, international organizations, academia, the media, and the diplomatic community accredited in Uzbekistan.
In his opening speech, Akmal Saidov, Director of the National Human Rights Center of Uzbekistan, emphasized the critical role of the Geneva Conventions in International Humanitarian Law (IHL).
"The Geneva Conventions are the cornerstone of International Humanitarian Law. Their translation into Uzbek in Latin script is a vital step in fostering a deeper legal understanding in our society, ensuring every citizen can access essential humanitarian principles," Saidov said. "This initiative reflects the strong cooperation between Uzbekistan, the ICRC, and Switzerland."
Swiss Ambassador Konstantin Obolensky highlighted his country's longstanding commitment to international law, particularly in humanitarian efforts.
"Switzerland is a staunch supporter of international law, especially international humanitarian law. In times of perceived instability, it is our shared responsibility to uphold the rules we have all agreed upon. Switzerland deeply appreciates Uzbekistan’s efforts in promoting the Geneva Conventions and is committed to supporting initiatives that uphold human rights globally."
Biljana Milosevic, Head of the ICRC Regional Delegation for Central Asia, underlined the ongoing importance of humanitarian principles, stating, "The principles of International Humanitarian Law remain vital in today’s world. The ICRC is committed to promoting these values, particularly in Uzbekistan, and commends the country’s proactive stance in this area."
The Geneva Conventions, adopted on 12 August 1949, are pivotal treaties that set international standards for the humane treatment of individuals in armed conflicts. The translation into Uzbek in Latin script is expected to broaden understanding and access to these essential legal frameworks across Uzbekistan.
The event also featured a video presentation and a photo exhibition, "Dialogues on Humanity," illustrating the global significance of the Geneva Conventions and the importance of their recognition worldwide.
The ceremony’s highlight was the official presentation of the Latin script transliteration of the Geneva Conventions and their Additional Protocols. This translation is a testament to Uzbekistan's commitment to international humanitarian standards and its dedication to public education on fundamental human rights, particularly in times of conflict.
The discussions during the event focused on the ongoing importance of IHL and human rights education. Participants expressed their continued support for initiatives aimed at advancing humanitarian values and ensuring widespread knowledge of IHL principles.
