A delegation of Uzbekistan led by a Special Representative of the President for the World Trade Organization (WTO), chief negotiator Azizbek Urunov and Deputy Minister of Agriculture Ahadbek Khaydarov visited Geneva on July 12.
The visit's objective was to familiarise the organisation's member states with the actions taken in the nation to activate the procedures of the country's admission to the WTO, as well as to participate in the 15th meeting of the Working Group on Azerbaijan's entrance to the WTO.
During the visit, the Uzbek delegation met with WTO Director General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala and her deputy Zhang Xianchen, and a number of bilateral negotiations on market access for goods and services were held with countries from Latin America, the Asia-Pacific region, Europe, and the Arab world.
The WTO commended the President's recent decision to accelerate the country's membership to the Organization. The WTO Secretariat will give comprehensive assistance to Uzbekistan in the process of joining and increasing bilateral cooperation, as well as assistance in the timely settlement of arising difficulties.
Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala also expressed the WTO's willingness to enhance technical assistance to Uzbekistan in order to promote bilateral and multilateral discussions with Organization members. In this regard, the parties explored the potential of enlisting the expertise of a number of foreign experts.
The Uzbek delegation, in collaboration with the WTO Secretariat, prepared the whole package of basic papers for the 7th meeting of the Working Group on Uzbekistan's entrance to the WTO which will take place in September-October 2023.
