A new infrastructure project is set to boost Kyrgyzstan's air connectivity. The China State Construction Engineering Corporation (CSCEC) will build a new international airport in the Jalal-Abad region, following a formal agreement signed between Tilek Tekebaev, the Presidential Plenipotentiary Representative for the region, and Liu Dong, the General Director of CSCEC.
Under the agreement, the construction of the Jalal-Abad International Airport is scheduled to begin in January 2025. A 360-hectare site in the towns of Suzak and Jalal-Abad has been designated for the development of the airport, which aims to enhance both domestic and international air routes in the region.
The head of the Jalal-Abad region highlighted that the airport would not only improve air travel but also strengthen Kyrgyzstan’s economic ties with China, reflecting the growing cooperation between the two nations. The new airport is expected to provide a boost to regional trade, tourism, and transportation.
Currently, Kyrgyzstan has 11 airports, including five international hubs: Manas, Osh, Issyk-Kul, Karakol, and Batken. Additionally, six regional airports serve domestic flights, connecting smaller towns such as Jalal-Abad, Isfana, Karavan, Kazarman, Naryn, and Talas.
Aviation security experts from Kyrgyzstan's State Civil Aviation Agency (SCAA) recently assisted their counterparts in Kazakhstan in preparation for an upcoming International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) security audit scheduled for 2025.
As part of the collaboration, the Kyrgyz delegation visited Astana International Airport to observe the application of aviation security measures. Manas International Airport (MAI) in Kyrgyzstan, which oversees 11 airports nationwide, successfully passed its ICAO audit earlier this summer, providing a valuable model for the ongoing preparations.
