The Presidents of Turkmenistan and Kyrgyzstan, Serdar Berdimuhamedov and Sadyr Zhaparov, have agreed to strengthen and expand bilateral cooperation during a meeting in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan.
They discussed prospects for trade and economic cooperation and partnership in the energy sector, the Kyrgyz president's press service reports.
Zhaparov noted that current indicators of trade and economic cooperation do not reflect the full potential. Over the past two years, the total trade turnover has increased, but amounted to about $82mn. According to him, the Kyrgyz side is interested in implementing new promising projects in trade, investment and logistics.
"Kyrgyzstan attaches great importance to the expansion and qualitative development of trade and economic relations and considers Turkmenistan an important economic partner". Berdimuhamedov stressed that "it is necessary to maintain the momentum and find new opportunities for its further growth".
The meeting took place on the sidelines of the regular summit of leaders of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) in the Kyrgyz capital.
Since August 2021, Turkmenistan has become one of the country's key suppliers of electricity (transiting through Uzbekistan). Kyrgyzstan also imports petrol, aviation kerosene and textiles. Turkmenistan buys electrical equipment, agricultural products and food.
The possibility of concluding a memorandum on the use of the route to send cargo from Kyrgyzstan via the port of Turkmenbashi to Astrakhan (Russia) is currently being discussed.
Experts also told Daryo that Turkmenistan has recently shown interest in the Uzbekistan-Kyrgyzstan-China railway project.
