In Uzbekistan, YouTube monetization remains restricted, prompting the Minister of Digital Technologies, Sherzod Shermatov, to encourage local content creators to focus on producing content in English. His remarks came during the International Partnership Initiatives event held in Tashkent on October 23, where a dialogue on the development of digital technologies took place.
After the event, Shermatov addressed journalists and responded to concerns about the current monetization challenges on YouTube in Uzbekistan. He emphasized the potential of English-language content to attract a broader audience and generate significant revenue.
“My recommendation is to explore additional opportunities on YouTube,” Shermatov stated. “Monetization in English is substantial. For instance, a student who graduated from Inha University in Margilon creates content featuring 3D printers. His channel has garnered 30mn views, allowing him to earn an average of $5,000 per month. The audience for English-language content is vast compared to content produced in Uzbek. Therefore, leveraging existing monetization mechanisms is crucial. Content in high-demand languages like English should be prioritized.”
Shermatov also noted that discussions regarding the potential removal of restrictions on YouTube monetization in Uzbekistan are ongoing. Earlier statements indicated that the head of YouTube had been contacted about this issue, but no timeline for a resolution has been established.
“We have this issue under consideration. We cannot say how long it will take,” the YouTube administration responded.
Experts have pointed out that the limitation on monetization may stem from various factors, including a lack of relevant legislation and the need for higher-quality content.
In 2023, former Deputy Head of the Presidential Administration Komil Allamjonov met with the US Ambassador to Uzbekistan to discuss limiting YouTube monetization and explore potential collaboration with Google (YouTube) to address issues in the information sector.
