A ceremony was held to mark the launch of nine major projects in the Tashkent region, collectively valued at $2bn on October 14. President Shavkat Mirziyoyev presided over the event, emphasizing the strategic importance of the Tashkent region in Uzbekistan’s economic landscape.
The Tashkent region has experienced growth over the past five years, with industrial output increasing 1.5 times to reach UZS 107 trillion ($8.37bn). Local exports have surged 3.5 times, nearing $1bn. This economic expansion is bolstered by a favorable business and investment environment, which has led to a substantial rise in foreign investments—jumping from $20mn in 2018 to $1bn last year.
Currently, 91 foreign investment projects worth $20.36bn and 28 domestic investment projects worth $4.5bn are underway in the region. The influx of foreign capital has also increased the number of enterprises with foreign participation to 1,700.
Key Projects Announced:
- Great Silk Road Industrial Technology Park: A special industrial park will be established in Olmaliq, covering 227 hectares, with an investment of $1bn. It will host approximately 100 enterprises in sectors such as electrical engineering, textiles, construction materials, and pharmaceuticals, creating 3,000 new jobs and generating annual production worth UZS 5 trillion ($391.2mn).
- Textile Industrial Park: A $350mn textile park will be constructed in Upper Chirchik over 69 hectares, featuring more than 20 enterprises focused on yarn, fabric weaving, dyeing, and finished textile production.
- Food Production Enhancements: In Yangiyol, 50,000 tons of mineral fertilizers and chemicals will be produced annually, along with high-quality exportable food production enterprises in Kybrai, contributing to the nation's food production goals.
- Energy Projects: The region is set to expand its energy capacity with six projects worth $1.5bn, aimed at increasing the current 5.7 gigawatts capacity. Notably, a $240mn solar power plant will be built in Boka district with China Datang, producing enough electricity for 240,000 households. Additionally, two energy storage systems worth $220mn will be established in Parkent and Piskent, enhancing the reliability of electricity supply.
- Hydropower Development: Four new hydropower plants, costing $880mn and with a combined capacity of 340 megawatts, are also under construction. The Tashkent region currently hosts 25 hydropower plants with a total capacity of 1,330 megawatts, representing 60% of the nation's hydropower capacity.
During the ceremony, President Mirziyoyev expressed gratitude to foreign investors for their contributions and wished them success in their endeavors. The symbolic launch of these nine projects marks a step toward further economic development in the Tashkent region, reinforcing its vital role in the national economy.
