The Kazakh leader, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, addressed the nation on April 6, acknowledging the severe impact of widespread flooding that has ravaged several regions of Kazakhstan. Describing it as possibly the most significant disaster in the last 80 years, he highlighted the extensive damage caused and the urgent need for action.
Reports from the Ministry of Emergency Situations reveal that the floods affected 3,171 private residential houses and 179 residential areas across six regions. To address the crisis, President Tokayev declared a state of emergency in 10 regions, with intensified efforts from the government to coordinate response operations.
Efforts involve a comprehensive mobilization of resources from various government agencies, including the Ministry of Defense, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, and the National Guard. President Tokayev reassured affected citizens of government support, pledging financial and other assistance to compensate for all material losses incurred.
Tokayev emphasized the need to learn from the catastrophe to enhance national preparedness against future extreme weather events. He concluded with gratitude to all involved in the relief efforts, underscoring the importance of unity and cohesion within Kazakh society during this challenging period.
