Kyrgyzstan recognizes Yandex Taxi as dominant market player
In Kyrgyzstan, the Antimonopoly Regulatory Service has categorized Yandex Taxi as a dominant player in the market for facilitating information interaction between passengers and taxi drivers. This decision aligns with the provisions of the Competition Law.
Similarly, the Committee for the Development of Competition and Protection of Consumer Rights in Uzbekistan has acknowledged the dominant position of Yandex Go within the local taxi market. Despite the presence of numerous competitors, Yandex Go reportedly holds a significant market share of 86.3%.
In 2023, the revenue generated by taxi operators in Uzbekistan amounted to $63.2 mn, indicating a growth of 30.4% compared to the preceding year. This uptick comes amidst a noteworthy expansion phase for the market, which witnessed a decline of 19.9% in 2020, followed by robust recoveries of 33.5% and 39.5% in 2020 and 2021, respectively.
In Kazakhstan, the Agency for the Protection and Development of Competition conducted a two-year antimonopoly investigation into Yandex Taxi. As a result, Yandex Taxi agreed to pay a fine of 3 bn tenge ($6.6 mn) to the state fund for supporting the digital ecosystem. Additionally, the company committed to implementing various measures to address antitrust concerns, including limiting commissions, enhancing pricing transparency, and reviewing tariff structures.
