Kazakhstan witnessed a surge in tourist arrivals, welcoming over 1 mn foreign tourists in 2023, reflecting a substantial 17% increase from the 2022 year's figure of 928,000. Simultaneously, domestic tourism also saw an uptick, with a reported increase of 647,000 visitors compared to 2022. In 2023, the total number of domestic tourists reached 7.5 mn, marking a considerable rise of 1.7 mn compared to 2019 figures.
Among the various destinations within Kazakhstan, Almaty emerged as the leading choice for both domestic and international tourists. In 2023, the city attracted over 2 mn visitors, with 540,000 of them being foreigners.
The surge in tourism has resulted in a 47.7% uptick in investments and a 64% expansion in tax revenue, underscoring Almaty's increasing attractiveness as a tourist hotspot. In line with the growing tourism sector, the city of Almaty was actively investing in tourism development initiatives. According to the Bureau of National Statistics, the city allocated $4.7 mn towards tourism development in 2023.
Encouraged by the positive outcomes, Almaty authorities have shown continued commitment to bolstering the tourism sector. This year, they allocated an additional $5.1 mn towards tourism development initiatives.
