Kazakhstan's Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation has announced that the country's reservoirs can now accommodate an additional 25.6 cubic kilometers of water, ensuring safety and security in the face of potential flooding.
The primary responsibility of the ministry is to safeguard strategic facilities and ensure the proper functioning of reservoirs in collaboration with local executive bodies. This involves the accumulation of floodwater and ensuring its safe release when necessary.
As of the latest report, Kazakhstan's reservoirs are currently at 63 cubic kilometers of water capacity, indicating an increase of 2.9 cubic kilometers since the beginning of the month. This increased capacity provides vital assurance in managing potential water surges and floods.
An example of proactive management was demonstrated at the Aktobe reservoir, where approximately 200 mn cubic meters of water were received over a span of two days, from March 27 to March 29. This influx accounted for more than 75% of the reservoir's volume.
To mitigate the risk of overflow and ensure the safety of nearby populations, authorities took measures to accommodate an additional 15 mn cubic meters of water beyond the peak capacity. Presently, the water level at the Aktobe reservoir has stabilized, alleviating concerns of imminent danger.
Attention has now turned to the southern regions of Kazakhstan, where reservoirs are gearing up for the upcoming watering period. Meanwhile, in the central, northern, western, and eastern regions, efforts are focused on safely managing the influx of floodwater. Local executive bodies are being kept informed about reservoir operations to facilitate coordinated responses in case of emergencies.
Gulmira Imasheva, deputy chairperson of the water resources and irrigation committee, emphasized the importance of continuous monitoring and timely communication.
"For prompt response, we conduct daily monitoring and inform the akimats and the emergency department," she stated.
Imasheva also highlighted the substantial capacity of reservoirs in the Tobol-Torgai basin, particularly in the Kostanay region, which can accommodate over 550 mn cubic meters of water, providing further reassurance in Kazakhstan's water management capabilities.
