The Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation, led by Minister Nurzhan Nurzhigitov, unveiled plans to curtail water consumption by 25% during transportation at the ongoing Global Water Forum on Water Technologies and Resources held in Astana, the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation of Kazakhstan reported. This initiative underscores Kazakhstan's commitment to prudent water management practices amid growing concerns over water scarcity and the need for sustainable solutions.
The inaugural International Forum on water technologies and resources, Global Water, convened in Astana, saw prominent attendees including Advisor to the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Kanat Bozumbayev, and Arman Turlubek, Head of the Water Resources Unit of the Delivery Unit office. Distinguished guests and experts from Austria, Israel, Finland, France, and other nations graced the event, reflecting a concerted international effort to address water-related challenges.
Central to the discussions were issues pertaining to the judicious utilization and safeguarding of water resources in Central Asia. Minister Nurzhigitov outlined pivotal measures undertaken by the Kazakhstani government, notably the formulation of the Water Code and the Concept for the Development of a Water Resources Management System until 2030, aimed at averting water shortages and enhancing water governance.
"Water conservation assumes paramount importance within the new Code," remarked Minister Nurzhigitov.
He elucidated provisions mandating rational water usage, adoption of water-saving technologies, and stringent regulations to deter misappropriation of drinking groundwater. Furthermore, the minister underscored intensified efforts to enhance water quality and enforce accountability within the water sector.
A focal point of the minister's discourse was the imperative of water conservation in agriculture. Collaborative endeavors with the Ministry of Agriculture seek to incentivize farmers towards embracing water-efficient practices, with subsidies for cost-effective irrigation systems set to escalate from 50% to 80%.
In alignment with directives from President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, the Government endorsed the Concept for the development of a water resources management system until 2030, delineating comprehensive strategies encompassing infrastructure enhancement, digitalization, and widespread adoption of water-saving technologies. The envisaged measures aim to slash water losses during transportation by 25%, ensuring sustained water supply to vital economic sectors and mitigating the specter of emergencies.
Minister Nurzhigitov expressed sanguinity regarding the Global Water Forum's role as a catalyst for knowledge exchange, fostering collaborative partnerships, and propelling innovative solutions in the water domain. He affirmed the ministry's commitment to incorporating valuable insights garnered during the forum into forthcoming policy endeavors, thus fortifying Kazakhstan's resilience against water-related challenges.
