At a gathering with farmers from the Kyzylorda region, Nurzhan Nurzhigitov, the Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation of Kazakhstan, revealed that 800 cubic meters of water per second will traverse the Syr Darya River this March, the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation reported. This announcement follows agreements reached with Uzbekistan, underscoring a vital collaboration in water resource management between the two nations.
Minister Nurzhigitov elucidated that this substantial volume of water is anticipated to reach Kazakhstan during February and March, building upon Uzbekistan's fulfillment of its obligations in February. The accord signifies a critical step in ensuring consistent water access for agricultural needs in the region.
The meeting, attended by local stakeholders including Nurlybek Nalibaev, the Akim of the Kyzylorda region, as well as representatives from Kazvodkhoz enterprise and the Aral-Syr Darya Basin Inspectorate, served as a platform to discuss comprehensive strategies for water management. Additionally, the presence of experts and scientists highlighted a collaborative effort to explore innovative solutions in water-saving technologies.
Minister Nurzhigitov outlined initiatives of the ministry, including plans to construct 57 reservoirs nationwide, with 20 under the direct purview of the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation. Preparations for the construction of the Karaozek reservoir in the Kyzylorda region are underway, with potential commencement slated for later this year.
Furthermore, the ministry aims to undertake repairs on 133 hydraulic structures and over 14,000 kilometers of irrigation networks. Collaborative efforts with international partners, such as the joint project with Australian company Rubicon Water, underscore Kazakhstan's commitment to modernizing irrigation infrastructure.
Minister Nurzhigitov emphasized the imperative of integrating water-saving technologies into agricultural practices to foster a culture of efficient water usage. He underscored the government's support through increased subsidies and reduced tariffs for irrigation water, alongside promoting the adoption of both domestic and foreign water-saving technologies.
Representatives from domestic and foreign companies specializing in water-saving technologies showcased their products, providing farmers in the Kyzylorda region with access to innovative solutions aimed at optimizing water usage.
