Smailov assumes the role previously held by Natalya Godunova, who was relieved of her duties effective April 1. With Smailov's appointment, a new era in auditing and financial supervision is anticipated.
Professional Background
Born in Almaty in 1972, Alikhan Smailov brings a wealth of experience and expertise to his new position. He earned a degree in applied mathematics from Al-Farabi State National University of Kazakhstan in 1994, followed by a master's degree in public administration from the Kazakhstan Institute of Management, Economics, and Forecasting under the President in 1996.
Smailov served as the head of the Cabinet of Ministers from January 11, 2022. During his tenure, he implemented various policy measures, including the regulation of fuel prices by the state for a period of 180 days, aimed at stabilizing the economy and ensuring affordability for consumers.
Transition and Presidential Decision
However, in February 2024, the government of Kazakhstan resigned, leading to a change in leadership. Smailov's position was succeeded by Olzhas Bektenov, who assumed the role of prime minister following the restructuring of the government.
