In a bid to foster a generation of environmentally conscious leaders, the Ministry of Ecology, Environmental Protection, and Climate Change revealed its Strategy for Youth Involvement in the Climate Agenda during a presentation held on March 11, the Ministry of Ecology reported.
The event, hosted at the Ministry's headquarters, saw the convergence of key figures including Minister Aziz Abdukhakimov, alongside representatives from various sectors including volunteerism, education, and media. Notable attendees included Shirin Abidova, head of the Volunteer Association, Michael Bäcklund, Chairman of the International Educational Platform on Climate Change "ClimateScience," and Madina Muminova, acclaimed screenwriter and author.
Central to the strategy is the recognition of the pivotal role young people play in shaping the future trajectory of environmental sustainability.
"The inclusion of young people in the process of developing and implementing all our strategies and programs is a key point in our work." Minister Abdukhakimov emphasized.
The strategy encompasses three primary pillars: the establishment of an institutional mechanism for engagement, the organization of calendar eco-activities, and the promotion of education in climate science and ecology. Under the institutional mechanism, plans include the formation of a Youth Council comprising 75 members, the appointment of 14 environmental ambassadors representing various regions, and the establishment of eco-committees within the "Little Heroes" children's eco-movement.
Furthermore, the Ministry outlined a series of upcoming eco-events including the EduCo Festival, Clean Games, Diving initiatives, and Eco-Awards, aimed at fostering environmental awareness and engagement among youth.
A highlight of the presentation was the signing of a Memorandum between the Ministry of Ecology and the Association of Volunteers of Uzbekistan, signaling a collaborative effort to execute projects outlined in the strategy. Among these projects is the Youth Environmental Ambassadors Program, which has already identified young leaders from across Uzbekistan to address regional environmental concerns.
In addition to policy initiatives, the Ministry showcased successful endeavors in environmental education, including charitable visits to regional schools distributing ecology-themed books in Braille. The "Little Eco-Hero" ceremony honored outstanding children actively involved in environmental conservation efforts, underscoring the importance of nurturing environmental stewardship from a young age.
The presentation also spotlighted innovative projects such as Upcycling.uz and the Swap Bozor initiative, which promotes sustainable practices and responsible consumption. Upcycling.uz champions the creative transformation of old items into new, stylish products, while Swap Bozor encourages the exchange of goods as a means to reduce waste and foster community-driven environmental responsibility.
