President Shavkat Mirziyoyev outlined Uzbekistan's commitment to a green economy and carbon neutrality during his speech at COP28.
"Transition to a green economy and achieving carbon neutrality are the key strategic objectives of New Uzbekistan. In cooperation with the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, China, Turkey, and other foreign partners, we are working on creating 25 gigawatts of renewable energy capacities by 2030. We have made first practical steps on “green” hydrogen production. As part of the “Yashil Makon” (Green Space) initiative, annually 200mn trees are being planted in our country."
President Mirziyoyev proposed global cooperation on climate change adaptation, the establishment of a "Loss and Damage" Fund, and the transformation of the Aral Sea region into a "hub of innovation." He emphasized the importance of a fair, transparent, and inclusive transition to a low-carbon economy.
"We intend to increase the area of green zones in cities to 30%. In order to create a resilient protective belt on the desiccated seabed of the Aral Sea, we have planted forests on an area of over 2mn hectares."
In the beginning of his speech, the president pointed out the urgent need for international cooperation to address climate challenges, emphasizing the impact on global sustainable development.
