Uzbekistan unifies production and export strategies: targets $12 bn in industrial exports
President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev emphasized the importance of expanding entrepreneurial activities and enhancing participation in export ventures during a meeting on March 12. The president, addressing a gathering of entrepreneurs via video conference, highlighted the significance of leveraging their expertise and contributions to bolster the nation's export capabilities, press service of the president reported.
This initiative follows discussions held during a previous meeting on December 18, 2023, where new strategies were formulated based on proposals from entrepreneurs and insights from experts. Despite significant efforts, analysis reveals that sectors such as electrical engineering, agriculture, pharmaceuticals, and jewelry have not met export targets. Additionally, a substantial number of potential exporters, numbering 2,709, remain unassisted by industry associations.
Drawing inspiration from models employed by developed nations, Uzbekistan plans to establish trade development companies to replace existing agencies and foundations. These entities will recruit skilled professionals, including designers, technologists, and marketers, to elevate national products to international standards and facilitate market entry in foreign territories. Financial support, including subsidies and compensations, will be allocated based on the performance and stability rating of entrepreneurs.
Moreover, efforts are underway to strengthen partnerships with key institutions such as the Uzbekekspertiza and the Chamber of Commerce and Industry. The establishment of business support project offices across all districts will further enhance support mechanisms for entrepreneurs at the grassroots level.
President Mirziyoyev emphasized that economic reforms prioritize the advancement of entrepreneurship, aligning with his vision to foster a conducive environment for business growth and prosperity. Critical to this endeavor is the reassessment of association tasks, enhancement of leadership capabilities, and the formulation of new projects aimed at expanding export opportunities.
Government officials have outlined ambitious plans to boost domestic industrial exports to $12 bn this year.
During a gathering on January 18, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev voiced discontent with the export strategy presented by the management of the complex and the mayors of Uzbekistan for 2024. Mirziyoyev stressed the necessity to "boost exports by a minimum of 30% annually" to propel the economy forward. He pointed out that although exports surged by 23.3% in the initial 11 months of 2023, excluding gold, the growth was a mere 5.7%.
