Mutual trade between Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan totalled $563.06mn in 2023, up 28% from a year earlier ($438mn), Kazakhstan's Bureau of National Statistics reports. During the reporting period, the country's exports to Turkmenistan totalled $397.178mn, up almost 17% from a year earlier.
Kazakhstan's main exports to Turkmenistan include grain, flour, ferrous metals; and non-metallic ores. Imports to Kazakhstan include citrus fruits, tomatoes, mineral, chemical and textile products.
The two countries are neighbours on the Caspian Sea, with a common land border of 458,263 km.
Experts told Daryo that Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan have new opportunities to transit international cargoes due to active attempts by China and Russia to develop new transport corridors.
Demand for the Kazakhstan-Turkmenistan-Iran railway route has skyrocketed amid a breakdown in established supply chains. The project was launched back in 2014, but with a capacity of 10mn tonnes of cargo per year, only a tenth of it has been used.
In line with the same strategic goals, it is planned to expand co-operation between the seaports of Aktau, Kuryk (Kazakhstan) and Turkmenbashi, as well as to build a road bridge across the Garabogaz Bay as part of the Turkmenistan - Kazakhstan border route.
