The Secretary General of the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), Helga Maria Schmid, is planning to visit Ashgabat in March 2024 to take part in a meeting of the heads of environment ministries of five Central Asian states, local television channel Altyn Asyr reports.
The issue was discussed at a government meeting. Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Rashid Meredov also presented the Turkmen government's 2024 co-operation plan with the OSCE.
The OSCE Centre in Ashgabat assists Turkmenistan in the implementation of its international commitments under the Aarhus Convention and other international environmental instruments. The Centre also actively contributes to endorsing national policies on the sustainable use of natural resources, and continuously supports the development of national environmental legislation.
Experts told Daryo that the ecology of the Aral Sea, prevention of desertification processes, protection of biodiversity and the environment, and sustainable management of water resources are on the regional agenda. Earlier, it was reported that a UN-backed centre for climate technologies in the Central Asian region is to be opened in the Turkmen capital.
