Turkmenistan produced 8.3mn tonnes of oil in 2023, while oil refining increased, local TV channel Altyn Asyr reports.
In the period under review, production of petrol rose by 2.0%, diesel by 2.2%, bitumen by 99% and lubricating oils by 5.8%. According to information, President Serdar Berdimuhamedov has instructed the state company Turkmenneft to attract foreign companies to explore and develop the Caspian shelf.
Top managers have also been ordered to pay special attention to issues related to reducing the negative environmental impact of the energy sector.
Experts told Daryo that more than 80% of the resources in the Turkmen part of the Caspian Sea are located at depths of more than 3,000 metres and in poorly explored areas of oil and gas accumulation, and are capital intensive.
The Turkmen sector is divided into 32 licence areas with estimated reserves (excluding contract areas) of 12.1bn tonnes of oil and 6.1tn tonnes of gas. Companies such as Dragon Oil and Petronas are currently active in this sector.
