Silk Road Samarkand (SRS), the proud owner of Central Asia's premier tourism complex, has recently revealed an impressive set of achievements for the year 2023 and is poised for even greater success in 2024, the National Information Agency of Uzbekistan reported. Transforming itself from a mere tourist attraction into a global hub for meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions (MICE), SRS is set to elevate its status on the world stage.
In the past year alone, the Silk Road Samarkand complex played host to over 24 major international, business, and government MICE events, attracting a staggering 30,000 participants. Notable dignitaries, including the heads of state from Uzbekistan, Italy, France, and Qatar, graced these events. Key gatherings included the General Assembly of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), the Asian Triathlon Cup, and the annual meeting of the Board of Governors of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD).
SRS Founder, Bakhtiyor Fazylov, expressed his aspirations for the upcoming year.
"Our goal is to comprehensively promote even greater recognition of Uzbekistan as one of the world’s most important tourist destinations," Fazylov stated.
Fazylov emphasized the importance of the tourism sector, with plans to turn 2024 into a breakthrough year for Samarkand.
In a move to support the organization of large-scale events, SRS has partnered with Hilton, leading to the rebranding of three hotels under the SRS umbrella. Further plans include the rebranding of three additional hotels in collaboration with Holiday Inn and Crowne Plaza.
The forthcoming year is poised to be filled with significant events in culture, politics, trade, gastronomy, and diplomacy at SRS. Events on the calendar include the 14th Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS COP14), the 2024 Triathlon World Cup, and a joint conference of the International Textile Manufacturers Federation (ITMF).
SRS's growth mirrors the overall development trajectory of Uzbekistan, aligning with forecasts that predict 10 mn tourists visiting the country in 2024. This growth is attributed to a substantial investment of over $700mn in developing tourism and industrial infrastructure in the Samarkand region. Furthermore, an agreement with a tourism company in China's Shaanxi province aims to expand tourism along the ancient Silk Road, contributing to the region's allure as a global destination.
