A proposal to organise a visit by OSCE Secretary General Helga Maria Schmid to the country in March 2024 to develop and strengthen Turkmenistan's relations with this structure was made at a meeting of the Turkmen government.
The local television channel "Altyn Asyr" reports that it is proposed to hold an international conference on "The Role of Neutral States in Strengthening Security and Confidence in the OSCE Region" in Ashgabat in the first half of this year. In addition, an initiative to hold a regional meeting of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly in Ashgabat in May this year has been discussed.
President Serdar Berdimuhamedov noted that "comprehensive development of relations with relevant international organisations, including the OSCE, is one of the priority directions of the country's foreign policy".
The main areas of activity of the OSCE Centre in Ashgabat are arms control, border security and counter-terrorism, human and drug trafficking, economic and environmental issues, protection of human rights, good governance and the rule of law, as well as elections and media freedom.
