On Janurty 19, the Senate of the Oliy Majlis in Uzbekistan convened for its forty-ninth plenary session, focusing on amendments and additions to certain legal documents, Oliy Majlis in reported. The aim is to harmonize the national legislation of Uzbekistan with the standards set by the World Trade Organization (WTO), marking a significant step towards the country's pursuit of WTO membership.
The proposed amendments primarily focus on harmonizing national legislation related to intellectual property, advertising, and state duties with World Trade Organization (WTO) agreements. Prominent legislations earmarked for adjustment encompass those pertaining to inventions, utility models, and industrial samples; trademarks and service marks; indications and names of places of origin of goods; advertising; drugs and pharmaceutical activities; and state duty.
Tanzila Narbaeva, Chairwoman of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis, emphasized that joining the WTO stands as a pivotal objective within the country's economic policy. She asserted that aligning national legislation with WTO agreements is crucial to legally underpin the reforms needed to facilitate Uzbekistan's entry into the global trade organization.
The proposed changes are expected to expedite Uzbekistan's WTO membership process and, crucially, safeguard intellectual property rights. The amendments also aim to foster an equal and competitive environment for both domestic and foreign investors, signaling the government's commitment to creating favorable conditions for economic growth.
"Joining the WTO is one of the main goals of the country's economic policy," stated Chairwoman Tanzila Narbaeva. "This document is an important step and will intensify our efforts to become a member of this organization."
Earlier remarks by Narbaeva underscored Uzbekistan's commitment to an independent economic policy, especially in challenging times. The nation is resolute in fostering economic development that is self-sustaining and not reliant on external factors.
Uzbekistan's entry into the WTO formally resumed in July 2020 during the 4th Working Party meeting. Following this, two more meetings transpired in June 2022 and March 2023.
