Uzbekistan's WTO roundtable: addressing challenges for economic development
The University of World Economy and Diplomacy hosted a pivotal roundtable discussion on November 20, focusing on the theme "Republic of Uzbekistan's Accession to the WTO: Current Status and Challenges."
Notable figures, including the First Deputy Chairman of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis of Uzbekistan and the Rector of UMEC Sodyk Safayev, convened alongside the Special Representative of the President on WTO Issues, Aziz Urunov, and esteemed professors from UMEC, as well as representatives from foreign universities.
The discourse delved into an analysis of the obstacles and challenges associated with Uzbekistan's accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO). Rector Sodyk Safayev stressed the necessity of collective efforts among stakeholders to yield positive outcomes, urging a more profound exploration of WTO-related issues.
Aziz Urunov expressed gratitude for the invitation and highlighted the vital role of joint meetings and discussions in achieving progress. He emphasized the significance of Professor Alisher Fayzullaev's master class on negotiation skills at the University of World Economy and Diplomacy.
Alisher Urunov, the Special Representative of the President on WTO accession issues, outlined two principal objectives for the country concerning WTO membership: reinforcing competition in the domestic market and boosting the competitiveness of manufactured goods. He expressed confidence that achieving these goals through WTO accession would contribute significantly to Uzbekistan's economic development.
The roundtable also scrutinized documents adopted by the President of Uzbekistan in June of the current year, aimed at eliminating regulatory acts impeding WTO accession. Active participation characterized discussions on the challenges hindering the path to WTO accession, with participants sharing insights and analyses.
