Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan are preparing a draft intergovernmental agreement on simplifying visa procedures for participants in international cargo transportation on the territory of the two countries.
The Turkmenavtoulaglary (Turkmenavtotransport) agency reports that this issue was discussed at the meeting of the joint expert working group. The parties also considered the optimisation of duties and charges levied on carriers in Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan in the process of international cargo transportation.
"The Turkmen side expressed interest in switching to the digital system "e-permit", which provides for electronic exchange of permit forms in real time.
Experts told Daryo that the two neighbouring countries are actively cooperating in the development of international transport corridors.
For Turkmenistan, the border with Uzbekistan is the longest among its neighbours - about 1,700km - along which the Dashoguz-Shavat and Kunya-Urgench-Khujeyli checkpoints are located. A free trade zone is being established in the border region. Turkmenistan is building a $2.3bn motorway in this direction.
The two countries are working together to implement the Uzbekistan-Turkmenistan-Iran-Oman transport corridor. This project could also link the region to India through the port of Chabahar.
Ashgabat and Tashkent are discussing ways to create favourable conditions for cargo transport through the Caspian Sea port of Turkmenbashi. This route could be used as part of the China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan-Turkmenistan-Azerbaijan-Georgia-Turkey-Europe corridor.
