Agency "Turkmenavtoulaglary" (Turkmenavtotransport) informs that from 15 January 2024 will start issuing and registration of permits of foreign countries to carriers carrying out international transportations on cars registered in the territory of Turkmenistan.
"The new service will create more comfortable and efficient conditions for international freight." The information said that from this period, permit and document analysis departments will operate in all five regions of the country.
"Road control authorities at border checkpoints will also issue and process permits for the Republics of Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan."
Issuance and processing of permits for Azerbaijan for those travelling through the Turkmenbashi International Sea Port checkpoint will be carried out directly at the checkpoint, while those travelling from other checkpoints (Artyk, Gaudan, Serakhs, Garabogaz, Altyn Asyr) will now be carried out at the place of vehicle registration.
The common border with Uzbekistan is the longest for Turkmenistan, about 1,700km. Checkpoints operate between the countries along Dashoguz-Shavat, Kunya-Urgench-Khojeyli, Gazojak-Druzhba, and Farap-Alat.
Experts told Daryo that Ashgabat and Tashkent are discussing options for creating favourable conditions for freight traffic through the Caspian Sea port in Turkmenbashi. The route could be used as part of a transnational China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan-Turkmenistan-Azerbaijan-Georgia-Turkey-Europe route.
The Uzbekistan-Turkmenistan-Iran-Turkey railway line, with a total length of more than 4,500km, was launched in 2022. This corridor has become Uzbekistan's shortest and most convenient way for export-import operations with Turkey.
The two countries are also working together to implement the Ashgabat agreement signed in 2011 to form an international transport corridor Uzbekistan-Turkmenistan-Iran-Oman.
