Turkmenistan has begun construction of a highway from the city of Mary to Turkmenabat, the regional centre of the Lepab district bordering Uzbekistan.
Local TV station Altyb Asyr reports that the head of Turkmenistan's People's Council, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, visited the construction site of the autobahn. Construction of the Tedzhen-Mary section is currently being completed.
Berdimuhamedov stressed that "the issues of modernising the markings of the new motorway and ensuring the smooth functioning of the traffic control system should be the focus of constant attention".
Experts told Daryo that construction of the new toll highway with a total length of 600 km began in 2019 - from the capital Ashgabat. The overall project is estimated at $2.3bn and quality control is being carried out by the Austrian company VCE Vienna Consulting Engineers ZT GmbH.
Payment terminals, motels, car parks and maintenance services planned along the motorway.
The new Ashgabat-Turkmenabat motorway will open up great opportunities for the development of transport communications with Uzbekistan, said Mammetkhan Chakyev, Director General of the Turkmenistan Transport and Communications Agency, as quoted by the local press.
According to him, the construction of the motorway will significantly increase the capacity of the country's road system, improve the quality of logistics services and create favourable conditions for accelerating international freight traffic.
"The connection of the motorway with the Ashgabat-Turkmenbashi motorway will allow trucks to reach the international port of Turkmenbashi and from there by sea to the Caucasus, Europe, the southern region of Russia, northern Iran, the Persian Gulf and Oman."
