In a step towards bolstering diplomatic ties and fostering economic collaboration, the Chairperson of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis of Uzbekistan, Tanzila Narbaeva, held a crucial meeting with Dr. Ahmed bin Nasser Ibrahim Al-Fadala, the Secretary-General of the Shura Council of the State of Qatar. The discussions centered around broadening cooperation between the two nations and exploring avenues to further enhance interparliamentary relations, the National Information Agency of Uzbekistan reported.
The economic ties between Uzbekistan and Qatar have been steadily growing, with an increase in trade turnover and investments. Both nations acknowledged that the current economic indicators while promising, do not fully reflect the immense potential that exists between them. To address this, both parties expressed a commitment to accelerating interparliamentary relations and pushing them to new heights.
A proposal was put forth during the meeting to establish regular visits and expedite the development of a draft document on interparliamentary cooperation as a practical mechanism to enhance bilateral ties. Following the discussions, an agreement was reached to facilitate mutual dialogue within various international organizations and parliamentary structures.
Uzbekistan views Qatar as a promising economic partner in the Middle East, and the intensification of relations has become a key focus for both nations. Several investment projects involving Qatari companies are currently underway in Uzbekistan. Notably, the construction of a 1600 MW thermal power plant in the Syrdarya region, scheduled to commence operations in 2024, involves collaboration between Qatari company "Nebras Power" and its French and Japanese partners, "EDF" and "Sojitz Corporation."
The two countries are actively exploring the establishment of reliable and secure transport and logistics corridors connecting Central Asia with the Gulf countries. Discussions on jointly promoting the realization of the Trans-Afghan Railway Corridor are underway, a strategic project that is anticipated to significantly boost mutual trade volumes between Uzbekistan and Qatar.
Crucially, Qatar is extending its support to Uzbekistan's efforts for a peaceful settlement in Afghanistan, while Uzbekistan fully supports Qatar's initiatives in providing emergency humanitarian aid to the Afghan people. The cultural and humanitarian ties between the two nations are deeply rooted in shared spiritual and cultural values, traditions, and the common Islamic faith.
