Turkmenistan plans to announce the country's accession to the Global Methane Pledge during the UN Climate Change Conference COP-28 in Dubai, UAE, from 30 November to 12 December.
The issue was raised at a government meeting, local TV channel Altyn Asyr reports. So far, some 150 countries have signed the document.
Turkmenistan has been working on the issue since 2021: a high-level intersectoral commission on reducing methane emissions has been set up and a roadmap for developing international cooperation in this area has been approved. Methane is a threat to the climate 80 times more potent than CO2.
Turkmenistan is a major supplier of natural gas in the region, bought by China, Russia, Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan.
Experts told Daryo that the leaks are mainly due to wear and tear on oil and gas pipelines and the release of unwanted methane gas, which is extracted along with oil, into the atmosphere.
According to local oil and gas companies, the country is taking measures to increase the use of associated petroleum gas and reduce natural gas losses during extraction, transportation, storage and processing.
