In a stride towards technological innovation, Tajikistan has announced the development of its own neural network, SomoniGPT. The revelation came during the session "Artificial Intelligence: Enemy or Friend of the Journalist" at the II CIS Media Forum, where Zarina Ismailzade, Deputy Head of the Information and Press Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, shared insights into this groundbreaking initiative.
SomoniGPT, named after the national currency Somoni, is positioned as the world's first Tajik innovation model with a distinctive feature: it takes into account the cultural and linguistic nuances of the republic. Ismailzade emphasized that the neural network has a wide range of capabilities, including data analysis, predictive modeling, and text generation. It can comprehend over 20 languages but generates responses exclusively in Tajik, contributing to its promotion and use within the local community.
"While there are currently limited users of neural networks in Tajikistan, we anticipate a gradual increase in their adoption over the coming years," Ismailzade stated.
The development of SomoniGPT aligns with Tajikistan's approved Strategy for the Development of Artificial Intelligence until 2040.
The announcement addresses a critical concern – the predominance of AI technologies developed in English. Ismailzade highlighted that this could pose challenges for their effective integration into Tajik journalism. To overcome this, she stressed the necessity of developing and adapting AI technologies to the Tajik language.
"At the moment, AI technologies are developed in English, which can create problems when using them in Tajik journalism. For the successful use of ChatGPT and other artificial intelligence technologies in the republic, it is necessary to develop them and adapt them to the Tajik language," Ismailzade explained. She further hinted at the potential modernization of the very essence of journalism in Tajikistan as a result of AI development.
