The city of Samarkand recently made headlines as it successfully hosted the XVI Verona Eurasian Economic Forum on November 3-4, where prominent leaders and experts gathered to discuss global cooperation issues. One of the key highlights of the event was the in-depth discussions and presentations surrounding the crucial agricultural sector, demonstrating its pivotal role in economic growth in many countries.
In a strategic move aimed at fostering international cooperation in agriculture, the Minister of Agriculture of Uzbekistan, Ibrahim Abdurahmanov, engaged in important discussions with the head of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in Central Asia, Viorel Gutsu, on the sidelines of the forum.
The discussions primarily focused on the current state of cooperation between Uzbekistan and FAO, delving into the political and technical aspects of their collaboration in recent years. Agriculture is an integral component of Uzbekistan's economic landscape, impacting not only economic growth but also the well-being of its citizens, food security, employment, and sustainable development.
Viorel Gustu, reflecting on the significant number of national and regional agricultural projects currently underway in Uzbekistan, proposed the introduction of a permanent representative from Uzbekistan to the FAO branch established in Tashkent in 2014. This suggestion aimed to enhance the efficiency of cooperation coordination between the two entities and strengthen their partnership further.
During the meeting, the FAO sub-regional coordinator also disclosed plans for an upcoming online meeting of Central Asian country ministers, further demonstrating the commitment to regional collaboration.
Furthermore, the discussions led to the identification of practical steps to implement the initiatives discussed at the International Conference on Food Safety, which was held in Samarkand in September. One of the primary initiatives discussed was the idea of organizing a conference between landlocked countries, facilitating the exchange of experiences and knowledge related to establishing efficient systems for the trade of agricultural goods.
Another significant topic on the agenda was the mutual cooperation in the development and enhancement of agriculture in Afghanistan, highlighting the broader regional approach that Uzbekistan and FAO are taking in their partnership.
