The State Migration Service of Turkmenistan reports that a working meeting was held in Ashgabat with Turkish Ambassador Togan Oral. "The parties expressed confidence in further intensification of cooperation in the field of migration in the interests of the friendly peoples of the two countries."
The information said that the official visit (October 25-26) of Turkmenistan President Serdar Berdimuhamedov to the Republic of Turkey gave a powerful impetus to bringing the strategic cooperation between the two countries to a qualitatively new level.
Until recently, citizens of Turkmenistan could visit Turkey (for up to 30 days) without a visa. However, at the request of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan, the visa-free regime adopted by Turkey about 15 years ago was cancelled in September 2022.
Official Ashgabat said the measure was "temporary" and would allow "to improve and maintain on a systematic basis the rules for the stay of Turkmen citizens in the Republic of Turkey".
Turkey's General Directorate of Migration Service reports that as of October 2023, more than 1.1mn foreigners with residence permits reside in the country, of which 102,970 are from Turkmenistan, which came second on the list after Russians.
