A national exhibition dedicated to the history of Turkmen carpets will open in Bukhara as part of the Days of Turkmenistan Culture. A thematic conference is also planned as part of the cultural campaign, Turkmenportal reports.
A delegation led by Turkmenistan's Minister of Culture Atageldi Shamyradov was received at the Olot border customs post in the Bukhara region of Uzbekistan.
Experts noted that Turkmen carpets have been sold for centuries in the legendary markets of Bukhara and Khiva, where ethnic Turkmen have long lived. The density of their carpets reaches 1,000,000 knots per square metre.
Turkmen carpets, the predominant colour of which is dark red, are woven at home from wool, cotton and silk.
They were used in "communication with God" ("namazlyks" - prayer mats), contributed to the solemnity of "asmalyk" (family holiday), replaced cupboards and chests of drawers ("khurzhuns", "chuvals", "torbahs"), insulated and decorated dwellings.
Back in the X-XIII centuries, in the times of the Great Seljuks, Turkmen carpets became famous in the markets of Europe and the East.
