In response to recent reports circulating on Telegram channels about the purported opening of a "NATO center" in Almaty, Kazakhstan's Ministry of Defense has firmly rejected these claims and provided clarifications regarding the purpose of the facility.
Ministry of Defense reported that the event in question was the official unveiling of the new conference hall at the Peacekeeping Operations Center in Almaty, attended by the U.S. Ambassador to Kazakhstan, Daniel Rosenblum. Contrary to the misinformation, the center is not affiliated with NATO; rather, it has been serving as an educational institution since 2006, specializing in the training of personnel for peacekeeping operations in compliance with United Nations (UN) standards.
"The official opening of the new conference hall of the Peacekeeping Operations Center belonging to the Ministry of Defense of Kazakhstan was held in Almaty with the participation of the U.S. Ambassador to Kazakhstan, Daniel Rosenblum."
The Peacekeeping Operations Center plays a pivotal role in the development of Kazakhstan's peacekeeping unit within the Armed Forces. Its primary mission is to equip personnel for participation in peacekeeping missions in accordance with UN-established guidelines.
"Since 2006, the center has been operating as an educational institution for the development of the peacekeeping unit of the Armed Forces of Kazakhstan. Its main purpose is to train personnel to participate in peacekeeping operations according to UN standards," the Ministry of Defense said in a statement.
The official statement from the Ministry of Defense clarifies that the facility is exclusively dedicated to UN-sanctioned peacekeeping efforts. Any information regarding the event can be verified through the official Facebook page of the U.S. Embassy in Kazakhstan.
U.S. Ambassador Daniel Rosenblum highlighted the U.S.'s support for Kazakhstan in expanding its capacity to train international peacekeepers. He emphasized the strong collaboration between the United States and Kazakhstan in the realms of security, prosperity, and peacekeeping.
"Ambassador Rosenblum had the honor of participating in the ceremonial opening of the new conference hall at the Kazakhstan Peace Operations Center. The building is the latest project supported by the United States of America to expand Kazakhstan's capacity to train international peacekeepers."
The false reports surrounding the so-called "NATO center" in Almaty have been widely disseminated on various public platforms, inaccurately suggesting that the facility would train peacekeeping forces according to NATO standards. In fact, the center focuses on adhering to UN standards for peacekeeping operations.
Dmitry Peskov, the press secretary of the Russian president, also commented on these reports, noting the distinct nature of peacekeeping missions. He mentioned that Kazakhstan's military actively participates in peacekeeping operations globally and expressed Russia's interest in learning more about the training process conducted by the Americans.
