On the sidelines of the Astana International Conference on Primary Health Care, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev of Kazakhstan welcomed the esteemed guests, WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Ghebreyesus, and WHO Regional Director for Europe Dr. Hans Kluge, for a crucial discussion on international cooperation with the World Health Organization.
The meeting served as a testament to Kazakhstan's unwavering commitment to global health initiatives and its dedication to working closely with the World Health Organization. President Tokayev acknowledged the pivotal role played by WHO on the international stage, expressing his country's intent to continue supporting the organization's efforts.
In his address to the distinguished guests, President Tokayev emphasized the challenging nature of leading the WHO in a rapidly changing and complex world. He commended Dr. Tedros Ghebreyesus for his leadership, stating;
"You have to deal with so many voices, so many points of view from so many countries and their delegates. You have to mediate between them to come to a very acceptable and compromised decision. I wish you success. We will be continuously supporting you."
The President underscored Kazakhstan's ongoing efforts to strengthen its healthcare system, focusing on post-pandemic recovery and the achievement of key public health objectives. He reaffirmed his country's commitment to supporting WHO-led initiatives aimed at improving global health outcomes. Kazakhstan is resolutely working toward the objectives of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including universal health coverage, reduction of maternal and infant mortality, and the complete elimination of the tuberculosis epidemic.
In response, WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Ghebreyesus expressed his gratitude for Kazakhstan's continuous support and discussed the significance of the Alma-Ata and Astana Declarations for the organization. Dr. Tedros shared his personal link to these declarations, mentioning his past involvement in primary healthcare development as a Minister of Public Health.
During their meeting, the leaders also explored avenues for collaboration within the framework of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) and the implementation of the "Roadmap for health and well-being in Central Asia for 2022–2025 (CARM)." These discussions underscored the shared commitment to improving health and well-being in the region.
President Tokayev concluded the meeting by extending his heartfelt appreciation to Dr. Tedros Ghebreyesus and Dr. Hans Kluge for their assistance in hosting the Global Conference on Primary Health Care and for their personal participation in this vital event.
