Uzbekistan's President, Shavkat Mirziyoyev, held discussions with Wang Chuanfu, the CEO of BYD car manufacturer, on September 26. The main focus of their conversation was centered around expanding BYD's operations in Uzbekistan, particularly in the production of hybrid and electric cars under the Chinese brand.
The Jizzakh region has been selected as the location for BYD's first joint production facility outside of China. During their meeting, both parties emphasized the importance of localizing components and spare parts to reduce transportation costs.
In collaboration with Uzavtosanoat, BYD signed an investment agreement to establish the BYD Uzbekistan Factory on the same day. The initial capacity of the plant will be 50,000 cars per year, with plans to gradually increase it to 300,000 cars in the future. Some of these vehicles will also be exported to other countries.
Mirziyoyev expressed his support for the supply of BYD electric buses to Uzbekistan and proposed the creation of engineering and service centers in the country to support these vehicles.
The production of electric vehicles in Uzbekistan has been a priority for Mirziyoyev since February 2022. The strategy includes localizing materials and components, and a memorandum of understanding was signed between BYD and Uzavtosanoat as an initial step toward this goal. The President also set a task to establish electric vehicle production in Jizzakh, with plans to produce electric cars from both BYD and Volkswagen.
Since February 2023, BYD has been opening dealerships in Uzbekistan, and the introduction of new import benefits has led to a significant increase in sales of electric vehicles.
