Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov has released a video in which he claims his 15-year-old son, Adam, is seen assaulting a man accused of burning the Quran, identified as Nikita Zhuravel. However, there is currently no independent verification of the identities of the individuals in the video.
According to BBC, those involved in the assault shown in the video, as well as Ramzan Kadyrov, who shared the video with his comments, could potentially face charges under at least nine articles of Russian law.
In a recent post accompanied by a 6-second video, Kadyrov expresses his pride in his son's actions and suggests that the individuals involved deserved the beating. He argues that these individuals do not respond to persuasion and are a hindrance to building and developing a stable state.
Nikita Zhuravel, who was arrested on charges of insulting religious sentiments following the alleged Quran burning, was brought to Chechnya at the end of May under the directive of Alexander Bastrykin, the head of the Russian Investigative Committee.
A criminal case against Zhuravel was initiated after a video of the Quran burning circulated on the internet. During questioning, Zhuravel claimed that he had burned the Quran on the orders of Ukrainian intelligence in exchange for a reward of RUB 10,000 ($102)
The Presidential Council for Human Rights (PCHR) had previously expressed concerns about Zhuravel's safety in Chechnya.
PCHR member Eva Merkacheva called on the Federal Penitentiary Service (FSIN) to transfer Nikita Zhuravel from the detention center in Chechnya to an FSIN facility in another region. This request was made following Zhuravel's report that he had been physically assaulted by 15-year-old Adam Kadyrov, the son of Chechnya's leader, while in detention. After investigating the incident, regional ombudsman Mansur Soltayev stated that human rights are highly respected in Chechnya, and individuals should not be subjected to torture or physical abuse.
In response to Kadyrov's release of the video, ombudsman Tatyana Moskalkova emphasized that while the destruction of sacred texts is a serious offense that offends the beliefs of many, individuals must be held accountable for their actions solely through legal means.
