Bethesda has announced the release of a minor update for its highly-anticipated game, Starfield. The company stated that this "small update" primarily focuses on addressing performance and stability issues, along with some general gameplay improvements. While the specific details of the update were not provided in the announcement, Bethesda assured players that they would find the complete patch notes for the update available.
Furthermore, Bethesda revealed its ongoing efforts to develop a more substantial update for the game. This larger update is expected to include several previously announced features and improvements, many of which were top requests from the gaming community. These anticipated additions encompass brightness and contrast controls, an HDR calibration menu, an FOV slider, Nvidia DLSS support, ultrawide monitor compatibility, and a dedicated "eat" button for food interactions within the game.
Starfield was officially released on September 6, 2023, marking a significant moment for Bethesda. Players who had pre-ordered the Premium Edition or Constellation Edition were granted early access to the game, starting on September 1.
In terms of player engagement, Bethesda's publisher declared on September 19 that the sci-fi RPG had already amassed an impressive player base of 10mn, making it "the biggest launch in Bethesda history." The game also garnered attention for its strong performance in the European market, reportedly ranking as the fifth fastest-selling game of the year during its launch week.
Despite its successful launch in terms of player numbers, Starfield has garnered mixed reviews in the gaming community. On the Steam platform, the game's reception is notably divided. While it has achieved a Mostly Positive rating based on nearly 90,000 user reviews, a significant portion—almost 25,000 reviews—have been negative. This division has led to Starfield becoming Bethesda's lowest-rated game on Steam, slightly falling below Fallout 76, which still maintains a surprisingly high rating of 71.76 percent despite its troubled launch.
Several factors contribute to this mixed reception. Controversies surrounding the inclusion of pronouns in the game's character creator have sparked review bombing incidents. Additionally, Starfield's exclusivity to Xbox and PC, a departure from the multi-platform tradition of Bethesda games, may have attracted further review bombing due to the ongoing console rivalry debates.
Moreover, genuine criticisms and divergent opinions about the new style of gameplay in Starfield have added to the varied reviews. Despite these challenges, Bethesda and Xbox, which now owns the company, seem to prioritize the game's overall success, as it has quickly become a major player in the gaming world, attracting millions of players through Game Pass and sales. The slight disparity in Steam ratings is unlikely to deter their focus on the game's ongoing development and expansion.
