The relatively new ransomware and cyber extortion group known as Ransomed.vc has asserted that they successfully breached Sony and obtained valuable data.
On their leak site, the group declared, "We have successfully compromised all of Sony's systems. We won't ransom them! We will sell the data, due to Sony not wanting to pay. DATA IS FOR SALE."
To substantiate their claim, the group released some data as evidence, including a file tree containing around 6,000 files, along with various documents and screenshots. However, some observers have noted that the provided proof does not unequivocally support their assertions. Given that Sony is a vast corporation with multiple divisions, the claim of compromising "all Sony systems" is likely an exaggeration.
Sony has not yet issued a statement regarding the situation, neither confirming nor denying a potential breach.
While Ransomed.vc may not be as well-known as major ransomware gangs like Cl0p or BlackCat, they have a history of conducting devastating attacks on financial institutions, data providers, and managed IT companies, Ryan McConechy, CTO of Barrier Networks says.
Typically, when attackers claim to have breached an organization, they tend to be truthful. Therefore, if Ransomed.vc's claims are accurate, Sony must take immediate remediation actions. This includes conducting forensics to determine what data has been stolen and updating systems to reduce its value. Sony should also notify affected parties so they can watch out for phishing scams and remain vigilant against further attacks. This incident serves as a reminder of the serious cybersecurity risks today and underscores the need to educate employees about these risks and enhance corporate defenses.
