Turkmenistan's President Serdar Berdimuhamedov, speaking at the 78th session of the UN General Assembly, proposed the creation of the Central Asia Security Conference and holding its first meeting in Ashgabat, local TV channel Altyn Asyr reports.
"Our country is taking the initiative to create, under the auspices of the UN, the format of the Central Asian Security Conference and its neighbouring zones".
According to Berdimuhamedov, the purpose of the Conference is to develop approaches and solutions aimed at bringing together and synchronising the efforts of Central Asian countries and the world community, international organisations, financial and economic institutions to ensure the sustainable, conflict-free development of the region.
"We express our readiness to hold the first meeting in Ashgabat in 2024".
Turkmenistan has maintained positive neutrality since 1995. The UN Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia was opened in Ashgabat in 2007.
In the late 1990s, the Turkmen capital became a venue for dialogue on resolving the inter-Afghan conflict. It was also the site of a series of UN-sponsored talks that played an important role in achieving peace and harmony in Tajikistan.
