The Director-General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, met with the President of Turkmenistan, Serdar Berdimuhamedov, in New York on the sidelines of the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) .
"In New York, on the sidelines of UNGA discussing Turkmenistan’s accession process to the WTO with H.E President Serdar Berdimuhamedov. Great work, good progress," - Okonjo-Iweala tweeted.
Turkmenistan's state agency reports that during the meeting it was noted that Turkmenistan is working to expand foreign economic ties and attract foreign investment to the country. A special government commission has been assigned and Turkmenistan granted acceding status in February 2022.
A memorandum on Turkmenistan's foreign trade regime is currently being drafted. Experts told Daryo that Turkmenistan needs to liberalize trade by removing barriers such as import tariffs, quotas, export subsidies and dumping practices.
Turkmenistan is the last former Soviet republic to begin negotiations with the WTO. It aims to join the organization by 2030.
