Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat (DABS) reports that work has begun in Herat province to increase the capacity of electricity supplies from Turkmenistan.
The $3.5mn project is being implemented in cooperation with Turkmenistan's ministry of energy.
It involves increasing the capacity of the Noor-ul-Jihad substation from 70 megawatts to 110 megawatts within six months. "A new booster transformer will ease the province’s power shortages."
Turkmenistan provides 20% of Afghanistan's electricity requirements, while Iran also contributes.
Until recently, nearly half of Afghanistan's energy demands were met by Uzbekistan, which is now focusing on domestic energy consumption due to an industrial expansion.
