Turkmenistan, one of the world's top ten cotton producers, will begin its cotton harvest campaign on 9 September, local TV channel Altyn Asyr reports.
President Serdar Berdimuhamedov held a working meeting with the heads of the agro-industrial complex and regional administration.
"At present, cotton ginning enterprises, receiving points, harvesters and transport for transporting the harvested crops are being prepared."
Turkmenistan's Ministry of Agriculture told Daryo that 1mn 250,000 tonnes of cotton will be harvested this year from 580,000 hectares of land.
Most of the cotton is used to make textiles, which have become "Turkmenistan's trademark". Local sportswear and jeans are ordered by a number of Western brands and distributed by WalMart, a global retail chain.
Prices for these products at the Turkmenistan State Commodity Exchange auctions are based on quotations from the Liverpool Cotton Agency.
