The US Congress has emphasised the importance of Turkmenistan's positive neutrality status, local TV channel Altyn Asyr reports.
In Ashgabat, a delegation from the U.S. House of Representatives headed by Darin LaHood met with the Speaker of Turkmenistan's Parliament Dunyagozel Gulmanova.
The congressmen "particularly emphasised the importance of the policy of positive neutrality pursued by sovereign Turkmenistan, which has become an effective tool of preventive diplomacy to strengthen global peace and security".
Turkmenistan has adhered to the status of positive neutrality since 1995. The country follows the policy of defence sufficiency in its military doctrine and is not a member of any military-political bloc in the world.
The United Nations Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia (UNRCCA) opened in Ashgabat in 2007.
In the late 1990s, the Turkmen capital became a venue for dialogue on the settlement of the inter-Afghan conflict. In due course, it also hosted a series of UN-sponsored negotiations that played an important role in achieving peace and harmony in Tajikistan.
