In Astana, residents opposed the construction of an art gallery by the Association of Young Artists of Kazakhstan during a public discussion of the city's layout, media reports. Public meetings were held on August 18 to discuss detailed layouts for several streets and plans for constructing an art gallery.
After the meeting, a protocol was established, and a vote was taken, with all residents expressing opposition. The first draft was submitted for public discussion under the law, and the Department of Architecture, Urban Planning, and Land Relations of Astana announced that no construction would be done.
According to Astana resident Aziza Shuzheeva, the city is filled with empty and idle buildings that are being maintained by the state through the Ministry of Culture or Akimat.
In her publication, Aziza Shuzheeva listed several idle buildings in Astana that could be converted into creative spaces for young artists. These include the Palace of Peace and Accord, the Arc de Triomphe, Bayterek, and the Nur-Alem Museum. She also suggested repurposing the National Library, the library of the first President, and the half-empty first floor of the Kazakhstan concert hall for similar purposes.
In addition, she proposed developing children's clubs in libraries, making the Internet accessible and filling it with content, and repurposing the half-empty Nurly Zhol train station for creative locations.
Aziza Shuzheeva recommended conducting an audit of these facilities, creating an innovative group of urbanists, activists, and urban creatives to develop new building concepts and find ways to monetize them.
